The Beatles were growing up. Musically and personally. Were far less inclined to submit to the dictates of the industry and felt like something new groped. The knowledge that they can afford all this was part of their growth.
"Rubber Soul" is the disc that greet the past and the future began to ogle It seemed that the four guards now things in perspective, not content to maximize the present. In most of them were aware that to last as much as possible was essential to define a personal style . A style that was influenced in a decisive encounter with one of the most influential factors on the culture and life of the late 60s: the ' LSD.
In any case, the evidence of this "growth" are scattered liberally anywhere along the grooves: George playing the sitar in "Norvegian Wood" a sign of interest in the East will not be a fad (as for the other three), the same "Norwegian Wood", Dylan markedly in its thematic shows such as The Beatles, outside of their microcosm started to even look at the references that were not loved (and children ...) of the fathers of rock'n'roll, and the beautiful "Girl" has an unusual atmosphere tragic and forlorn, and also contains some early reflections by John on Christianity, "My life" presents for the first time Lennon struggling with the places and people from his past ; "Nowhere Man" is the first Beatles song that makes no mention of love, "Drive My Car" is one of the most modern songs of the group and one of the best songs opening of an album ... Paradoxically, the great and justly celebrated "Michelle", despite his great wealth harmonic , ends up being one of the episodes less "interesting" (as innovative) of the disc.
"Rubber Soul" album is definitely step by step "child" during the "adult", the demonstration that the group could grow because it had a real creative streak even if not yet fully expressed, and not remain tied to a fashion designed, like all fashions, to end in nothing. Where will the new themes, but also some experiments sound (some psychedelic beginning to peep from the cover with their faces distorted, the handling of tapes, exotic instruments) we understand the following years: what matters is that with this album the Beatles show in the most obvious and the first time a fundamental thing: have a tomorrow.
